Rep. Kolleh Opposes Pres. Boakai’s Proposed Legislation, Vows to Strongly Vote Against It

Gbarnga, Bong County – Bong County District #2 Representative James Kolleh has voiced strong opposition to President Joseph Boakai’s proposed legislation aimed at abolishing harmful cultural practices, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Speaking to journalists in Gbarnga during discussions on the bill, Kolleh argued that Liberian cultural traditions “cannot be abolished,” insisting that any attempt to do so undermines the identity of indigenous communities.

Kolleh stated that if the bill were brought to a vote, he would “strongly vote against it,” emphasizing that instead of outright abolition, government should work with traditional leaders to “modify” practices viewed as harmful. He added that all societies—including Western nations—retain their own cultural norms, and therefore Liberia should not be pressured to eliminate its traditional practices.

While expressing his personal views, Kolleh also supported the idea of sending the proposed legislation for broader public consultation, allowing citizens to provide input before lawmakers take final action. He stressed that the outcome should reflect the will of the people.

Kolleh’s remarks included controversial comparisons between harmful cultural practices and LGBTQ identities. These comments reflect his personal beliefs but have sparked concerns among rights advocates, who view such statements as stigmatizing.
