Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah has called for an independent investigation into the mysterious death of South African national Anwar Futlo, whose body was discovered under suspicious circumstances at the Boulevard Palace Hotel late Monday evening, December 30, 2024.
Using his official Facebook page on January 2, 2025, Kolubah alleged that high-ranking Liberian government officials were implicated in the case, raising concerns about the credibility of the ongoing investigation by the Liberian National Police.
Kolubah urged the South African government to dispatch a team of expert pathologists to conduct a transparent inquiry, asserting that the police lack the impartiality needed for such a high-profile case. He warned that the nation’s integrity is again under scrutiny, declaring, “Our nation’s credibility is at stake under the leadership of Joseph Boakai.” He also described Room 1026, where Futlo’s body was found, as a “crime scene,” amplifying the public’s demand for clarity and accountability.
Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police has not ruled out the possibility that Anwar Futlo may have committed suicide. Speaking at a press conference on December 31, Inspector General Gregory Coleman revealed that Futlo had visited a humanitarian home on 9th Street before his death.
Coleman stated that Futlo allegedly went into a bathroom at the facility, where he consumed a cleaning substance. Screams were reportedly heard from the bathroom, prompting security personnel to intervene, only to find Futlo unresponsive.
According to Coleman, preliminary investigations suggest Futloo may have purchased the cleaning substance from a local supermarket before heading to the humanitarian home. The Inspector General noted that further findings would be released as the investigation unfolds.
Despite this update, Kolubah remains skeptical of the police’s ability to handle the case without bias, citing alleged connections between government officials and the events surrounding Futlo’s death. He has called for an independent probe to ensure transparency, claiming that internal investigations cannot be trusted to uncover the truth.
Futlo’s death has triggered widespread speculation, with critics questioning whether foul play might have been involved. The mysterious circumstances surrounding his demise, coupled with Kolubah’s allegations, have intensified public scrutiny of the government’s response to the case.
The representative, a vocal critic of the Boakai administration, argues that the government’s failure to address the issue decisively risks further damaging Liberia’s international reputation. He has vowed to keep pushing for answers and accountability in the case, calling on domestic and international bodies to intervene.
Room 1026 at the Boulevard Palace Hotel, once a symbol of luxury and hospitality, now stands as a chilling reminder of the unresolved questions surrounding Futlo’s death. Whether the investigation ultimately confirms foul play, suicide, or another cause, Kolubah’s allegations and the police’s preliminary findings have highlighted a case that continues to cast a shadow over Liberia’s justice system.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations have emphasized that as the investigation progresses, demands for transparency and accountability continue to intensify, with many hoping the truth will soon emerge. Until then, the mystery surrounding Futlo’s death persists, leaving Room 1026 as a haunting symbol of Liberia’s enduring struggle for justice.
