Respect Supreme Court Ruling, Opposition Demands Pres. Boakai

Monrovia, Liberia – A united front of Liberia’s opposition parties is calling on President Joseph Boakai to respect and adhere to a recent Supreme Court ruling that reinstated Speaker J. Fonati Koffa as the legitimate head of the House of Representatives. The political bloc—led by the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Alternative National Congress (ANC), and Citizens Movement for Change (CMC)—gathered Monday at the ANC Headquarters in Monrovia to voice their strong disapproval of President Boakai’s recent comments casting doubt on the Court’s decision.

The opposition coalition accused the President of undermining the rule of law by questioning the legitimacy of the judiciary’s ruling, which they described as “a constitutional mandate that must be respected by all branches of government.”

“The Supreme Court’s decision is final and binding. Any attempt to dismiss or challenge its authority threatens the constitutional balance that upholds our democracy,” said ANC leader Alexander Cummings during the press conference.

The controversy stems from a ruling issued on April 23, 2025, in response to a Bill of Information filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and a group of lawmakers. The Supreme Court ruled that the actions of the self-declared majority bloc—which had attempted to oust Speaker Koffa—were “unconstitutional and illegal,” effectively reaffirming Koffa’s position as Speaker of the House.

The President, however, reportedly expressed skepticism about the Court’s authority over legislative matters, sparking backlash from both opposition figures and legal experts. Supporters of the Majority Bloc have also insisted that the House of Representatives, as an independent body, has the sole authority to determine its leadership.

Despite ongoing tensions within the legislature, the opposition maintains that the judiciary’s ruling is both legal and essential for maintaining constitutional order.

“President Boakai must uphold his oath to protect the Constitution,” said CMC Chairperson Esther Nyemah. “This is not about party lines—it’s about the survival of our democracy.”

Former President George Manneh Weah also weighed in, urging President Boakai to comply fully with the Court’s decision. In a public address following the ruling, Weah warned that ignoring the verdict could plunge the country into a constitutional crisis with far-reaching consequences.

“Any attempt to undermine, ignore, or dismiss this ruling threatens the very foundation of our nation,” Weah stated. “Our fragile peace and democratic progress cannot withstand such a blow.”

Weah called on Liberia’s international partners to hold the Boakai administration accountable and stand in support of democratic principles and rule of law.

As the political standoff continues, the opposition has vowed to intensify pressure on the executive branch until the Supreme Court’s decision is publicly recognized and implemented.

“Liberia’s strength lies in our adherence to justice,” said ANC’s Cummings. “We will not rest until the law is respected—by everyone, including the President.”
