Monrovia, Liberia–The House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature has elected Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon as its new Speaker in a decisive vote.
Representing Montserrado Electoral District #11, Koon secured victory over Rep. Musa Hassan Bility of Nimba County District #7 with a vote margin of 43 to 26.
Koon previously served as the Speaker of the Majority Bloc and acted as presiding officer of the House for six months.
However, the Supreme Court later ruled rendering his leadership and all associated decisions invalid.
Following the resignation of former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, on Monday, May 12, 2025, Koon stepped down from the presiding role, allowing Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah to assume leadership.
Rep. Koon then returned to his seat and was officially nominated and elected as Speaker.
His election formally establishes his authority in the House and confirms him as second in the presidential line of succession.
Koon now faces the critical task of healing a deeply divided legislature that has been plagued by months of internal conflict and legislative gridlock.
