River Gee County ~ In a surprising and untimely development, A. Dennis Wion has resigned from his position as Chairman of the River Gee County Sports Steering Committee, less than a month after his official appointment.
Businessman Wion, who was appointed on September 22, 2025, along with his co-committee members, was entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading preparations and managing the upcoming 2025/26 National County Sports Meet.
His appointment had been greeted with optimism, especially among youth and sports enthusiasts who viewed him as a capable figure to revive the county’s struggling sports sector.
In a formal resignation letter addressed to River Gee County Superintendent Mike Tarpeh Swengbe, a copy of which has been obtained by this paper, Wion cited both personal and administrative challenges as reasons for his unexpected departure.
According to the businessman, his resignation is primarily due to mounting personal and business obligations, which he says have left him with limited time to commit to the demanding responsibilities of the position.
He also alleged internal interference and mismanagement within the committee, claiming that certain influential figures in the county were undermining the committee’s authority and operations.
“This was a tough decision, but I believe it’s in the best interest of the committee and my personal commitments,” Wion noted in the letter, without naming specific individuals responsible for the alleged interference.
On September 22, 2025, River Gee County Superintendent Mike Tarpeh Swengbe appointed businessman A. Dennis Wion as Chairman of the County Sports Steering Committee, along with a number of individuals, including technical staff and coaches.
However, the superintendent’s decision to directly appoint technical personnel, rather than allowing the newly formed committee to do so has been criticized by some observers. Critics argue that this move effectively sidelined the authority of Wion’s leadership and undermined the committee’s autonomy from the onset.
The controversy has fueled ongoing concerns about interference and lack of coordination within the county’s sports administration.
Before his resignation, Wion had publicly voiced his commitment to leveraging sports as a tool for community development and youth empowerment. His brief tenure had sparked renewed hope in the county, particularly among young athletes and civil society actors eager for reform in the local sports system.
News of his resignation has generated significant concern among stakeholders, with several youth leaders, sports advocates, and residents calling on the County Administration to intervene.
Many are urging a swift and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wion’s departure and for the appointment of a qualified and dedicated replacement to avoid setbacks in the county’s preparation for the national competition.
The River Gee Sports Steering Committee plays a pivotal role in organizing the county’s participation in the National County Meet, overseeing athlete recruitment, training, and mobilizing resources for sports infrastructure development.
Wion’s sudden resignation raises concerns about the continuity of these critical activities, especially with the national tournament just around the corner.
As of press time, the River Gee County Administration has not issued an official statement regarding the resignation, nor has it announced a replacement to fill the now-vacant chairmanship.
