Senate Abandon Session

The absence of senators from Tuesday’s session at the Liberian Senate has left many perplexed and discontented, raising questions about legislative accountability and adherence to constitutional mandates.

Journalists and Capitol Building staffers arrived at the Capitol Building today only to find the Senate chamber deserted, in stark contrast to the House of Representatives, which convened as scheduled.

The Senate’s failure to provide any official explanation for their absence has deepened public frustration.

According to constitutional provisions, Tuesday and Thursdays are designated for legislative sessions, highlighting the mandatory nature of these gatherings.

Despite this, no senators were present, and the Senate’s press bureau remained silent, failing to offer any briefing on the matter.

The unprecedented abandonment of session coincides with ongoing scrutiny over the Senate’s recent contentious retreat, reportedly costing over $400,000 for just three days.

This expenditure has drawn widespread criticism from civil society groups, media commentators, and concerned citizens, demanding transparency and accountability in financial reporting.

Criticism has particularly targeted Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, who has been labeled by some as “Rescue Mother” for her political role.

However, recent events have led critics to coin the term “Rescue Mafia,” highlighting growing disillusionment among her supporters.

In a belated response, Senate Director of Press Alfred Johnson attributed the absence of senators until after 2 PM to their attendance at the funeral of the late son of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Charles Sirleaf.

While acknowledging this personal loss, critics question whether such attendance justifies neglecting constitutional duties.

Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence  took her Facebook page, announcing their participation in the funeral service.

However, public sentiment remains critical, emphasizing the senators’ obligation to prioritize national responsibilities over personal matters.

The public’s outcry underscores broader concerns about legislative accountability and ethical conduct within Liberia’s political sphere.

As demands for transparency intensify, all eyes remain on the Senate’s next steps amidst a growing call for overdue financial disclosures and renewed commitment to constitutional duties.
