Senate Backs Law of the Sea Agreement, Food Assistance Agency Bill

The Liberian Senate has concurred with the House of Representatives on the passage of a significant international agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The agreement, widely referred to as the “High Seas Treaty,” aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. This move signals Liberia’s commitment to protecting global marine ecosystems and upholding international environmental standards.

The Senate’s decision followed a formal communication from the House of Representatives, which submitted House Engrossed Bill #4, requesting the Senate’s concurrence. The Plenary of the Senate acted in agreement, thereby completing the legislative process required for ratification.

The treaty is a key milestone in international environmental governance, designed to ensure that marine resources in international waters are managed responsibly and equitably.

In a related development, the House of Representatives has also concurred with the Senate on the passage of a separate legislative instrument — an Act to establish the National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA). This follows the submission of Senate Engrossed Bill #2, which sought the House’s concurrence.

NFAA is expected to play a critical role in addressing food insecurity and coordinating national food assistance programs in Liberia.

With both chambers now aligned on these two key legislative measures, Liberia moves forward on fronts of environmental stewardship and food security.
