Monrovia, Liberia – After months of serving effectively in an acting capacity, Mohammed Sherif has been officially confirmed by the Liberian Senate as the Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
The Senate’s unanimous endorsement cements Sherif’s position at the helm of the nation’s power utility and paves the way for the full rollout of his strategic vision for the sector.
His confirmation followed a rigorous vetting process, culminating in strong bipartisan support from lawmakers. Senators praised Sherif for his extensive experience and deep understanding of both the challenges and opportunities within Liberia’s energy landscape-qualities they deemed critical to his appointment.
Having already led the LEC on an interim basis, Sherif enters the role with a significant advantage.
His prior engagement has provided him with firsthand exposure to the corporation’s operational, financial, and infrastructural hurdles, positioning him to lead without the typical adjustment period new appointees often require.
As the institution responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity nationwide, the LEC is central to Liberia’s economic and social development.
Sherif’s confirmation comes at a pivotal moment for the utility, which continues to face daunting obstacles.
Key issues include outdated infrastructure, high commercial losses, limited electricity access in underserved areas, and the ongoing need to improve financial sustainability.
