BONG, LIBERIA — The Chairman of the Ways, Means, and Finance Committee of the Liberian Senate, Prince Kermue Moye Sr., has announced plans to summon Asky Airlines before the Senate in response to increasing public concerns regarding the airline’s operations in Liberia.
Asky Airlines, known as The Pan-African Airlines, operates flights primarily throughout West and Central Africa, with its headquarters in Lomé, Togo, and its main hub at Lomé–Tokoin International Airport. Recent incidents have raised alarms among Liberian travelers, notably a flight from Ghana that reportedly experienced significant technical difficulties mid-air, necessitating an emergency landing in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Passengers on the affected flight reported that, after several hours of repairs, they were ultimately flown to Liberia without their checked luggage. Many travelers faced the inconvenience of their bags being left behind; only carry-on items made it with them.
OKFM journalist Julius Jeh expressed his concerns regarding the airlines, stating, “It was the same Asky we were to board on Friday from Accra to Monrovia. Imagine the concern and fear in us. That flight was delayed by more than an hour before landing in Accra to pick us up, heightening our wariness and anxiety.”
Additionally, it has been indicated by airport personnel (not Asky staff) at Roberts International Airport that the missing luggage might follow on a subsequent flight.
This ongoing situation is compounded by a recent near-disaster involving Liberia’s Information Minister Jerelimak Piah, who, along with several government officials, narrowly avoided calamity when ASKY Airlines flight #1520 faced severe mid-air turbulence while returning from China. Minister Piah described the experience as “one of the most frightening” of his life, prompting the government to arrange alternative transportation for the delegation’s safe return to Liberia.
Senator Moye has expressed particular concern about the possibility of encountering similar issues on his upcoming trip with Asky Airlines to Lomé, where he plans to transfer to an Ethiopian Airlines flight for a journey to the United States.
He emphasized the urgency of addressing these operational concerns and intends to collaborate with his Senate colleagues to summon the airline’s management for clarification on their flight safety protocols and the resolution of reported issues. Moye’s remarks were made during a conversation with journalists in Gbarnga, Bong County, on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
The growing dissatisfaction among the public and officials alike signals a critical moment for Asky Airlines to reassess its operational standards within the Liberian airspace, as it faces scrutiny from both the government and the travelling public.
