Margibi County Senator and Chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Hon. Nathaniel F. McGill, has submitted two landmark education bills aimed at strengthening Liberia’s technical and vocational education system.
In a statement released Thursday, July 3, Senator McGill announced the formal submission of the bills titled: “An Act to Repeal the 1976 Amended Act of the Booker T. Washington Institute (BWI) to be known as the Booker T. Washington Institute of Agricultural and Industrial University College (BWI-AIUC)” and “An Act to Establish the Duazon TVET Institute.”
“Today, we submitted two important bills,” Senator McGill wrote. “Both bills received their first reading on the floor and have been sent to the appropriate committee room for further review.”
The proposed BWI Act seeks to transform the historic Booker T. Washington Institute into a degree-granting university college focused on agricultural and industrial education. If passed, the new status would allow BWI-AIUC to expand its curriculum, enhance its academic standing, and produce graduates with advanced technical and vocational qualifications.
The second bill aims to establish a new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute in Duazon, a rapidly growing community in Margibi County. The Duazon TVET Institute is expected to provide skills-based training and workforce development opportunities, targeting youth and adults seeking employment in Liberia’s growing industrial sectors.
Both bills mark a significant step in the government’s push to revamp and modernize Liberia’s educational infrastructure, particularly in the technical and vocational sectors.
Senator McGill reaffirmed his commitment to advancing policies that empower Liberians through practical education and job-ready skills.
