“Senators were not Coerced” Pro-Tempore Karngar-Lawrence Clarifies

Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence has clarified that members of the Liberian Senate were not coerced or intimidated to sign the amended joint resolution calling for War and Economic Crimes Court.

In less than a month, the anticipated concurrence from the Senate was actualized with twenty eight out of twenty nine of them affixing their signatures to the resolution.

The decision was reached when Senators endorsed the Committees on Judiciary and Security joint report.

According to Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, members of the Senate had the opportunity to scrutinize the resolution before affixing their signatures contrary to what is being perceived.

Senators on the other hand while giving their views sounded dissatisfied, noting that the government has computing priorities rather than the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court.

Their views on the resolution are creating suspicion as to whether or not they were cohorsed to sign.

Addressing a press conference today, April 9 2024 at her Capital Building Office, Pro-Tempore Karngar-Lawrence said the decision was based on consultation with senators, giving them the opportunity to scrutinize the resolution.

Meanwhile, the Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence believes warlords should bear the greatest responsibility of their actions that took away the lives of thousands of Liberians.

The Senate regrets the devastating situation that hinders the peace and stability of our country. This demonstrates our robust action for the rule of law , promoting human rights and gaining public trust nationally and internationally“, She noted.

The Grand Bassa County Lawmaker who heads the Senate believes the establishment of the Court serves as a deterrent to any future occurrence.

Senator Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence admonished Liberians to see their actions as the start of national reconciliation, healing and peace building

Making this decision is the beginning of accountability to meet the peace of the land, national healing and reconciliation”

The amended joint resolution which was passed today if concurred by the House of Representatives will be sent to the Executive to develop a bill for enactment into law.
