Six Liberians Chevening Scholars Return

The British Embassy in Monrovia has welcomed six Liberians back to the country after completing prestigious Chevening Scholarships in the United Kingdom, the Embassy announced this week.

Chevening Scholarships, funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations, provide emerging leaders worldwide the opportunity to pursue one-year master’s degrees at top UK universities.

The program is available in more than 160 countries and territories.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the British Embassy said, “We are delighted to welcome these six outstanding Chevening Scholars back to Liberia.

They are ready to lead, ready to inspire, and ready to contribute to the country’s development.”

The returning scholars completed a range of graduate programs at prestigious institutions across the UK.

Among them: Austine Baryo, MA in Human Rights, University of Sussex, Dr. Ibrahim F. Ajami, MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine, University of Oxford, Jarius Andrew Greaves, MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, University of Sussex, Ms. Mildette Somah, MSc in International Business and Development, University of Sussex, Mohammed Boakai Kamara, MSc in Water and Wastewater Processes, Cranfield University, and Okokon Asuquo, MA in International Development Management, University of Bradford.

“These scholars exemplify the ambition, leadership potential, and academic excellence that Chevening seeks to develop. We look forward to seeing the impact of their knowledge and expertise in Liberia,” the Embassy added.

Chevening Scholars are recognized for their ability to rise to prominent positions in their countries and drive positive change in their communities. The program emphasizes leadership, networking, and innovation.

Liberia’s 2024 cohort represents diverse fields including human rights, public health, entrepreneurship, international business, water and sanitation management, and development management—key areas critical to national growth.

The British Embassy encouraged the public and private sectors to engage with the scholars as they apply their newly acquired knowledge to strengthen governance, education, health, and sustainable development in Liberia.
