Bomi County Senator Melvin Snowe has called on the Executive Branch to account for the prolonged suspension of Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) commissioners, questioning the delay in presenting findings from an audit ordered nearly a year ago.
President Joseph N. Boakai suspended the LTA Board of Commissioners on April 26, 2024, following concerns over alleged financial irregularities detailed in a status report on the agency’s operations. The General Auditing Commission (GAC) was tasked with conducting a full audit, but since then, no report has been submitted to the Senate, leaving the commissioners in indefinite suspension without due process.
Although their suspension did not include salary or benefit cuts, reports indicate they were denied their entitlements. Meanwhile, individuals serve in acting capacities without Senate confirmation, making critical decisions in the telecommunications sector. Snowe warned that this situation undermines legislative authority and the nation’s governance framework.
“The Senate cannot and must not remain silent in the face of this blatant disregard for the controlling laws of Liberia,” he said, urging his colleagues to demand accountability from the Executive Branch.
He emphasized that those responsible should face the law if the audit reveals financial misconduct. However, the suspended commissioners must be reinstated with full benefits if no wrongdoing is found.
