Snowe Revives Push for Liberia Tourism Authority
In a move to bolster Liberia’s tourism sector and harness its potential for economic growth and development, Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has reignited the conversation around the establishment of the Liberia National Tourism Authority.
Senator Snowe’s push for the creation of this authority comes with a call to amend Chapter 31 of the 1972 Law, paving the way for the formalization of Liberia’s tourism governance.
The Bill, initially introduced during the tenure of the 54th Legislature, did not gain the necessary momentum to become law. However, Senator Snow is determined to see it through, reintroducing it to the 55th Legislature as the Liberia Tourism Act of 2024.
The proposed legislation seeks to address the current framework where tourism falls under the Ministry of Information, a setup believed to constrain the sector’s potential for both national and international appeal.
At the core of the proposed Liberia National Tourism Authority is the vision to elevate tourism as a key driver of socio-economic development.
Tourism is not only seen as a means to boost revenue and employment but also as a platform to showcase Liberia’s rich cultural heritage and natural wonders to the world.
Senator Snowe emphasized the importance of establishing high standards within the tourism industry, stressing the need for training and human resource development to ensure excellence in service delivery.
Moreover, he highlighted the significance of promoting responsible and community-based tourism practices that empower local populations and preserve cultural authenticity.
“Development of tourism leads to dignity, respect, and nurtures local culture, enriching the tourism experience and fostering pride in Liberia’s tourism sector,” stated Senator Snowe in his communication to the Senate Plenary.
Crucially, the proposed Liberia National Tourism Authority aims to actively engage local communities, including women’s groups, youth, volunteers, and minority populations, in all stages of tourism development. This inclusive approach seeks to democratize decision-making processes, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are equitably distributed across society.
Furthermore, the establishment of the authority is expected to enhance Liberia’s image as a tourism destination, both domestically and internationally. By promoting sustainable tourism practices and showcasing the country’s diverse attractions, Liberia can attract foreign exchange earnings and drive economic growth.
As the bill moves through the legislative process, stakeholders within the tourism industry, as well as members of the public, eagerly anticipate its passage. If successful, the Liberia National Tourism Authority could mark a transformative milestone in Liberia’s journey towards becoming a globally recognized tourism destination, unlocking opportunities for prosperity and development for generations to come.
Tourism stands as a cornerstone of President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, signaling a strategic focus on this sector to align Liberia with global standards and aspirations.
