Snowe to Sue Government Over “Malicious” Allegation

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe is heading to court to challenge what he describes as a “malicious” and “dangerous” treason allegation levied against him by the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Information.

The senator, during Thursday’s session at the Liberian Senate, announced his decision, citing the government’s accusation as baseless and politically motivated. “I will go to the court in order for my name to be vindicated, since the Senate has done nothing about my case,” Snowe stated passionately.

The controversy stems from a May 24 press statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), accusing Snowe of making inflammatory and destabilizing remarks while on an official ECOWAS assignment in Sweden. The Ministry claimed Snowe was using his international platform to undermine the Boakai administration—an accusation he considers tantamount to treason.

Senator Snowe, a member of the ECOWAS Parliament and a leading opposition voice, continues to vehemently deny the claims, labeling them as an attack on his character and political standing. “These allegations are completely unfounded. They are politically driven and are endangering my life and that of my family,” he said.

According to the senator, he formally communicated his concerns to the Liberian Senate, requesting its intervention and a public investigation into the government’s claims. However, he says the Senate’s silence has left him with no option but to seek redress through the judiciary.

“This body has failed to act. That is why I must now rely on the court to clear my name and protect my legacy,” Snowe declared.

The senator also sounded an alarm over recent threats to his life, which he believes are directly linked to the government’s allegations. “My life is in the hands of the state,” he told his colleagues. “If I die today, the government will be held responsible because of the statement issued by the Ministry of Information.”

Snowe revealed that the threats have not only affected his personal security but have also caused emotional distress to his family, particularly his 90-year-old mother. “Her blood pressure has gone up since she learned of this situation. My family had initially hidden the news from her to protect her health,” he disclosed.

In a formal complaint addressed to the Senate and titled “Complaint of Malicious Allegations Issued by the Government of the Republic of Liberia”, Snowe demanded that the Senate make public any findings regarding the government’s accusations, and that the Ministry of Information issue a retraction along with a formal apology.

As the matter now heads to court, it underscores the deepening rift between the Boakai administration and opposition lawmakers, raising concerns about political stability and the misuse of state power to target dissenting voices.

Senator Snowe has vowed to pursue every legal channel necessary to protect his name, his family, and his political integrity, insisting that justice must prevail.
