As the House of Representatives remains locked in a deepening impasse, the country’s and its citizenry’s consequences are becoming increasingly dire. At the heart of the crisis is embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, who continues to resist mounting calls from his opposing colleagues to step aside amid allegations of corruption and conflict of interest.
The stalemate has rendered the House ineffective, with over 15 sessions failing to reach a quorum and vital legislative business, including the passage of the 2025 National Budget, hanging in the balance.

While the majority of Liberians suffer, a select few stand to benefit. The protracted stalemate allows political actors to exploit the situation for personal gain. Koffa’s refusal to step aside despite the allegations against him suggests a desire to cling to power, potentially to shield himself from accountability. Similarly, while pushing for Koffa’s resignation, members of the Majority Bloc may also use the crisis to consolidate their influence in the Legislature.
Political gridlock often serves as fertile ground for corruption as the focus shifts from governance to infighting. In this case, both sides of the divide risk prioritizing their ambitions over the nation’s well-being.
The calls for Speaker Koffa to resign are not without merit. Leadership is about service, and when a leader becomes a source of division rather than unity, stepping aside can be an act of statesmanship. As Senator Amara Konneh aptly stated, “Walking away is leadership, too.”
