The newly elected Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Hon. Richard Koon, has appointed Representative Anthony Williams of Maryland County’s second district as Chairman of the House Committee on Banking, Finance, Currency, and Insurance. The announcement was made on Thursday, May 15, 2025, as part of the Speaker’s second batch of committee appointments following his official assumption of office on May 13.
Rep. Williams will now lead the powerful committee responsible for overseeing a range of critical financial and economic matters within the country. His committee will provide legislative oversight on issues including monetary policy, banking regulations, public financial management, and the operations of financial institutions.
Additionally, the committee will monitor foreign exchange practices, insurance policy frameworks, currency valuation, and matters concerning government interest rates. It will also play a role in evaluating financial aid policies aimed at supporting commercial and agricultural sectors.
Williams’ appointment places him at the forefront of Liberia’s financial policymaking efforts, as lawmakers look to strengthen economic governance and ensure transparency within key financial agencies and ministries.
This strategic move by Speaker Koon signals his intent to consolidate leadership within the House and empower legislators who are expected to play vital roles in shaping Liberia’s economic future.
