Speaker Koon Begins Official Visit to Guinea to Bolster Regional Ties

Conakry, Guinea-The Speaker of the 55th House of Representatives of Liberia, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, has officially commenced a two-day diplomatic visit to the Republic of Guinea, signaling a renewed push for deeper cooperation between the neighboring West African nations.

Speaker Koon and his parliamentary delegation were welcomed with formal honors upon arrival at the Guinea–Sierra Leone border by Guinean joint security personnel and members of Guinea’s National Assembly.

The visit marks a significant step in regional parliamentary diplomacy, particularly within the framework of the Mano River Union (MRU), a sub-regional organization focused on promoting economic cooperation and regional integration among Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire.

The delegation traveled onward to Conakry, Guinea’s capital, where Speaker Koon is scheduled to participate in a series of high-level meetings.

These engagements, according to a release issued by the Speaker office will focus on fostering bilateral legislative collaboration and laying the groundwork for the creation of a Mano River Union Parliamentary body.

“The bonds between our two countries are rooted not only in geography but also in shared history and mutual aspirations,” Speaker Koon stated ahead of the meetings. “This visit is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to peace, stability, and economic growth through parliamentary partnership.”

Joining Speaker Koon on the visit are prominent members of Liberia’s House of Representatives, including Hon. Nekher Gaye, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; Hon. Austin Taylor, Chair of the Committee on Maritime; and Hon. Samson Wiah, Co-Chair on Maritime Affairs.

Their presence underscores the importance of strengthening legislative oversight on foreign policy and regional maritime interests.

The planned discussions are also expected to touch on cross-border security, trade facilitation, and joint infrastructural projects, all of which are key concerns for MRU member states navigating the complexities of regional development.

The release, amongst other things revealed that the visit concludes tomorrow, with a joint communiqué expected to outline next steps toward establishing the MRU Parliamentary forum and expanding inter-parliamentary cooperation between Liberia and Guinea.
