Speaker Koon Calls for Legislative Transparency and Accountability

Speaker of the 55th House of Representatives Richard Nagbe Koon has urged his colleagues to embrace legislative transparency and strengthen oversight in the fight against corruption. Addressing lawmakers at the opening of a two-day Legislative Engagement Retreat at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County, Koon emphasized the need for integrity and accountability within the Legislature.

He noted that the Legislature plays a critical role in combating corruption, waste, and abuse, and called on his fellow lawmakers to demonstrate a commitment to openness in governance. He assured members of the House of Representatives that under his leadership, there will be a renewed focus on the three fundamental responsibilities of the Legislature: lawmaking, oversight, and representation.

Koon also stressed the importance of unity and reconciliation among lawmakers to ensure good governance and improved service delivery for Liberians. He expressed his administration’s dedication to setting a new standard for transparency and accountability, urging his colleagues to align with these principles for the betterment of the country.

Meanwhile, Speaker Koon has been invited to attend the Executive Committee Session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) in Rabat, Morocco, from May 21 to 22, 2025. The invitation, extended by Rt. Hon. All Kolouto TCHAÏMI, Speaker of Chad’s National Assembly and Chairperson of the APU Executive Committee, acknowledges Liberia’s active role in the regional parliamentary body.

The APU expressed appreciation for the contributions of Liberia’s House of Representatives toward strengthening parliamentary cooperation in Africa. Speaker Koon’s participation in the high-level session is expected to reinforce Liberia’s commitment to democratic governance and legislative effectiveness on the continent.
