Kokoyah, Bong County – Rehabilitation work has begun on the long-dilapidated St. John River Bridge, a vital link between Bong and Grand Bassa Counties ~ an effort led by Bong County District #1 Representative Prince K. Koinah.
The bridge, built in the 1960s, has been a source of concern for decades. Locals have described it as a “death trap” following multiple fatal accidents. Mounting public concern recently prompted Rep. Koinah to call for legislative intervention.
In a formal communication to the House of Representatives, he urged an investigation into the roles of both government institutions and concessionaires in the bridge’s longstanding neglect.
As a result of that initiative, ArcelorMittal Liberia has begun restoration work on the structure, providing essential logistical and technical resources. According to ArcelorMittal’s Chief Engineer Julius Saywallah, the rehabilitation is designed for durability, with the bridge expected to last at least 50 years once completed.
Rep. Koinah visited the rehabilitation site, located near the Rock Crusher area, where he was warmly received by community members expressing gratitude for his proactive leadership. He underscored the bridge’s strategic importance not only for local commuters but also for ArcelorMittal’s transport operations.
Also recognized for his contributions was Grand Bassa District #3 Representative Alfred Flomo, whose support has been instrumental in advancing the project.
Residents from both counties have welcomed the ongoing works, calling it a long-overdue step toward restoring a crucial economic and transportation artery in the region.
