The President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Hon. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, has expressed strong disappointment over what she described as the persistent mismanagement and lack of accountability surrounding the renovation of the Executive Mansion.
Speaking during a press conference with legislative reporters up Capitol Hill, Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence said it was unacceptable that after years of continuous funding and several reported phases of completion, the renovation of the nation’s highest office remains unfinished.
She lamented that the project, which has consumed millions of dollars in public funds since it began more than a decade ago, has become a symbol of inefficiency and poor financial oversight in government.
“With all that kind of fundings that had gone into the renovation of the Executive Mansion and there is nothing done there disappointing,” Senator Karnga-Lawrence stated. “This is disappointing and it must be addressed through transparency and accountability.”
In light of these concerns, the Senate Pro-Tempore has called for a comprehensive audit of all funds allocated and expended on the project. She emphasized that such an audit is essential to uncover how the resources were utilized and to ensure that those responsible for any mismanagement are held accountable.
Senator Karnga-Lawrence further noted that the audit would not only promote fiscal discipline but also help restore public trust in government’s commitment to proper financial management and project execution. The Executive Mansion, which serves as the official residence and office of the President of Liberia, has been under renovation since it was gutted by fire in 2006.
Despite repeated budgetary appropriations, successive administrations have failed to bring the project to completion, prompting growing public frustration.
