Student Activist Obadiah VanjahKollie writes Open Letter to Orange and Lonestar MTN GSM Company

Subject: Ongoing Network Challenges in the Fendell-Careysburg Corridor

Dear Orange (Orange Liberia) and Lonestar Cell MTN,

As a resident of the Fendell-Careysburg corridor, I am writing to formally express my growing concern and dissatisfaction with the persistent decline in network quality in this area. Over the past month or so, connectivity, particularly from Orange, has been consistently poor, making it nearly impossible to rely on your services for essential communication. This is especially disappointing in light of your recently reported US $10 million investment in the new Icon16 head office on 16th Street in Sinkor, Liberia. While infrastructure growth is important, it must be matched by reliable service delivery, markedly in areas where your customers live and work daily.

As for Lonestar Cell MTN, the situation has been similarly poor, and unfortunately, these issues have persisted for several months without any meaningful improvement.

What makes this problem even more concerning is that network performance noticeably improves once one leaves the Fendell-Careysburg corridor. This clearly suggests a localised issue that, regrettably, continues to go unaddressed.

This corridor is not only residential, it is also an academic hub. The University of Liberia – UL’s Fendell campus is located here, and many students, faculty members, and professionals reside in this corridor and in nearby communities. For them, reliable internet is not a luxury but a necessity, for research, coursework, remote learning, and professional work. The ongoing lack of stable connectivity is not only inconvenient; it actively undermines progress and productivity.

As paying customers, we have a right to expect the quality of service your companies advertise and for which we are billed. Instead, we continue to experience unreliable signals, slow speeds, frequent disruptions, and in many cases, no service at all. This reflects poorly on your commitment to service reliability and customer satisfaction.

Regardless of whether the root cause is technical, infrastructural, or otherwise, it is your responsibility to investigate and resolve the issue as a matter of urgency. We are not requesting special treatment, we are simply asking for the basic standard of service that your customers deserve and expect.

I strongly urge you to prioritise a thorough and lasting solution to these ongoing network challenges in the Fendell-Careysburg corridor. This matter has been neglected for far too long, and we believe the time for meaningful action is now.

Yours sincerely,

Obadiah D. Vanjahkollie
