Summoned For Corruption: LACC Probes NICOL Officials Over Alleged Financial Malpractice

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has launched an official inquiry into the financial activities of the National Insurance Company of Liberia (NICOL), bringing in several top financial officials for questioning.

The action follows what the Commission described as a “continued failure” by NICOL personnel to submit key financial documents necessary for an ongoing investigation.

Among those summoned by the LACC are Mr. Dweh Thomas Bedell, NICOL’s Chief Financial Officer; Mr. Prince T. Freeman, Account Clerk; and Mrs. Charlotte Y. D. Kpanah, Comptroller.

According to LACC sources, the trio was given a two-week deadline to comply with the request for financial documentation, a deadline that reportedly passed without submission.

Repeated follow-ups by the Commission yielded no cooperation, prompting LACC to take what it termed as “lawful measures” to ensure compliance and accountability.

The officials were brought in earlier this week to provide clarity on alleged financial discrepancies, although the Commission has not yet disclosed the exact nature or scale of the suspected malpractice.

In a statement issued Thursday, the LACC stressed that the ongoing actions are consistent with standard investigative procedures and do not constitute a presumption of guilt.

“These individuals are being given the opportunity to assist the investigation by clarifying their roles and providing relevant information,” the statement noted.

The NICOL officials are said to be cooperating with the process as of Thursday, following their appearance before the Commission.

This case marks the latest in a series of probes by the LACC targeting state-owned enterprises and public institutions amid a renewed crackdown on corruption.

Financial accountability advocates have praised the LACC’s swift move, calling for a transparent process that ensures justice is served.

NICOL has not yet issued an official response to the unfolding investigation, but internal sources indicate the agency may be preparing a formal statement in the coming days.

The LACC has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, impartial, and in full accordance with the law.
