SUP @55: Struggle and Activism as Grand Parade Set for Nov. 28

As it marks 55 years of ideological struggle, activism, and student solidarity, the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has officially announced a calendar of events to commemorate its historic anniversary.

The celebration is set to climax with a grand parade through the principal streets of Monrovia on Friday, November 28, 2025.

In a statement released by the anniversary committee, led by Jeraldine Kennedy, SUP declared Monday, October 20, 2025, as a pre-parade day of reflection, marking the founding of the movement.

Miss Kennedy has called upon all ideologues, veterans, militants, students, and sympathizers to rally around the anniversary committee and reaffirm their commitment to the principles that have guided the party for over five decades.

“SUP at 55 is not merely a celebration of years, but a powerful statement on the endurance of radical consciousness and unwavering belief in justice, equality, and the power of organized student action; leading the planning efforts is Cde. Jeraldine Kennedy, who chairs the anniversary committee, the statement read.

The celebration kicks off with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 7:00 AM. The event will serve as a spiritual moment to honor the fallen, recognize the living, and seek strength for the struggle ahead.

Following the thanksgiving, Monday, November 17 will mark Veteran Homecoming and Honoring Day at the University of Liberia’s Main Campus. This event will pay tribute to past leaders and militants whose dedication kept the party alive through decades of political storms.

Marty’s Day will be observed on Tuesday, November 18, at the Capitol Hill Campus. This solemn indoor program begins at 7:00 AM and will memorialize comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of student justice and democratic advocacy.

The spotlight will shift to female leadership on Wednesday, November 19, with the celebration of Women’s Presidium Day. Held at the Capitol Hill Campus, the day will highlight the crucial role women have played and continue to play in shaping the direction of SUP.

A Sports Day is scheduled for Thursday, November 20, at the Fendell Campus. Designed to promote unity, camaraderie, and physical well-being among militants and students, the event will bring together various faculties and student groups in friendly competition.

The pinnacle of the celebration will be the Grand Parade and Indoor Program on Friday, November 28, with participants marching through the principal streets of Monrovia before converging at the UL Auditorium, Capitol Hill Campus. The parade promises to be a vibrant showcase of ideological expression, revolutionary chants, and student solidarity.

SUP’s 55th anniversary is being celebrated at a time when student movements across the continent are grappling with new challenges, from rising tuition costs to limited academic freedoms. Yet, the party insists its foundational ideals remain relevant.

“The spirit of resistance and political education remains as urgent today as it was in 1970. SUP stands as a testament to the power of collective struggle,” said Comrade Kennedy during the press briefing announcing the calendar.

Founded during an era of national and continental upheaval, SUP has long positioned itself as the voice of Liberia’s student population. Its legacy is rooted in challenging authoritarianism, advocating for democratic reforms, and elevating the voices of the marginalized.

Over the decades, SUP has endured suspensions, repression, and institutional pushback. However, its ideological resilience has ensured its survival and growth, culminating in this milestone celebration.

As the party moves toward its sixth decade, the 55th anniversary provides not only a moment of celebration but also an opportunity for introspection and re-commitment. With new challenges emerging on the horizon, SUP appears poised to carry its revolutionary flame into the future.
