The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) at the University of Liberia has announced the timeline and theme for its 54th-anniversary grand celebration, inviting students, ideologues, and party supporters to participate.
Under the theme, “Reaffirming the Faith of Massescracy: A Call for Intra-Party Unity and National Progress,” this year’s commemoration highlights SUP’s dedication to social justice, academic freedom, and peace.
The anniversary events are scheduled to begin on November 17 and culminate on November 22 with a grand parade through the streets of Monrovia.
The SUP leadership calls on its members and supporters to come together to support the anniversary committee and to attend each event, affirming their commitment to the party’s core values and enduring legacy.
Founded on October 20, 1970, SUP has a long advocacy and political activism history.
Over the past five decades, the party has played a progressive role in Liberia’s student movement, intelligentsia, and broader political struggle, having significantly contributed to the consolidation of democracy, academic freedom, and peace in Liberia and Africa. Its legacy includes vocal opposition to past regimes, including those of the True Whig Party, former President Samuel Doe, former President Charles Taylor, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and George Weah.
The series of events will include a Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church beginning at 7 AM, and Veteran Homecoming and Honouring Day on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the University of Liberia Main Campus beginning at 7 AM.
The anniversary will also illuminate Martyr’s Day Indoor Program, which is slated for Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at 7 AM at the University of Liberia Main Campus.
The Women Presidium Day is at the same time set for Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at the Capitol Hill starting at 7 AM; as the Sports Day event will be on Thursday, November 21, 202 on Fendell Campus at 7 AM.
A Grand Parade and Indoor Program is expected to take place on Friday, November 22, 2024 at the University of Liberia Main Campus and Principal Streets of Monrovia beginning 7 AM.
The program will end with a grand parade on November 22 bringing together SUP militants, cadres, veterans, students, and supporters as they march through Monrovia.
Following the parade, an indoor program will take place at the University of Liberia’s main auditorium on Capitol Hill. This event symbolizes SUP’s on-going commitment to advocating for the rights of students and ordinary Liberians.
Speaking on behalf of the party, SUP’s Secretary General, Cde. Odecious Mulbah, and Chairman, Cde. Sylvester Wheeler reaffirmed the importance of the anniversary. They encouraged all party members to actively support the events, as a show of unity and resilience in the pursuit of social justice and equality.
The Student Unification Party remains a voice on the University of Liberia campus, with the upcoming celebration promising to be a defining moment in the party’s history as it continues to champion the causes of Liberia’s youth and marginalized communities.
