SUP Demands UL Reopening

The Student Unification Party (SUP) has ramped up its criticisms of the Boakai-Koung administration, accusing it of neglecting the pressing needs of the Liberian people, particularly in the education sector.

At the center of SUP’s grievances is the immediate reopening of the University of Liberia (UL), which has been closed for months, leaving students stranded and disrupting their academic progress.
SUP has called out the government for its failure to prioritize the needs of UL, the nation’s flagship institution of higher learning.

The party argues that the continuous closure of UL reflects not just administrative incompetence but also a lack of commitment to addressing the challenges faced by students and faculty. “In less than One Year, Mr Boakai has somersaulted the entire State”, Emmanuel Polay, co-chair for the party stated.

Poor infrastructure, lack of essential academic resources, and unresolved labor disputes have compounded the crisis at UL, according to SUP. The party is demanding urgent government intervention to restore normal academic activities and improve conditions on campus.

SUP also condemned the suspension of students at Tubman University in Maryland County, labeling the decision as an attack on academic freedom. The party called for the immediate reinstatement of the affected students and urged the government to uphold the principles of education as a right, not a privilege.

In a broader critique, SUP has outlined 30 grievances against the Boakai-Koung administration. These include the poor governance of public institutions, widespread economic hardship, and a growing disconnect between the government and the people.

The party criticized the administration’s 11 months in office as being characterized by nepotism, inefficiency, and a lack of meaningful reform.

As the leading voice for students and marginalized groups, SUP is mobilizing mass rallies to press for its demands. The party has urged all Liberians, students, educators, laborers, and professionals alike to join the movement to hold the government accountable.

SUP reaffirmed its commitment to fighting for justice, academic freedom, and equitable access to resources, declaring that the continued closure of UL is unacceptable. The party vowed to remain steadfast in its advocacy until these urgent issues are resolved, calling on the government to act immediately to address the growing frustrations of the Liberian people.
