The Swedish Embassy in Monrovia has announced that Sweden will end its bilateral development cooperation with Liberia by August 2026, citing reductions in Sweden’s overall development budget.
Liberia is among several African nations affected by the cutbacks, with similar phase-outs planned in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Tanzania. According to the Embassy, the decision is solely budgetary and unrelated to any political developments or concerns within Liberia.
While the move will bring an end to all bilateral operations in the country, Sweden says it will continue to support Liberia through global multilateral organizations and the European Union. Embassy officials stressed that the closure does not signal a weakening of ties between the two nations.
Despite the phase-out of direct aid, the Swedish Government says it remains committed to fostering strong and lasting relations with Liberia. Stockholm plans to shift its focus toward expanding cooperation in areas beyond traditional development assistance—particularly in trade and business.
The Embassy emphasized the long-standing bonds and shared values between the two countries, adding that these foundations will continue to guide their partnership in the years ahead.
