Teachers in Ganta Boycott Classes Over Salary Arrears

By Jeremiah Gayflor

Ganta City, Nimba County — Academic activities at the Francis Nya Maweah Model School in Ganta City have been disrupted after at least fifteen instructional staff laid down their chalks in protest over unpaid salaries.

The affected teachers announced that they have refused to enter classrooms or conduct lessons due to what they described as the government’s failure to settle three months of salary arrears. According to the aggrieved educators, the go-slow action began on March 26, 2026, and will continue indefinitely until their outstanding payments are made in full.

Speaking to Verity News, several of the teachers expressed frustration over what they termed repeated unfulfilled promises by education authorities. They specifically accused the Minister of Education for Instructional Affairs of failing to honor a commitment made during a meeting held at the school in December 2025.

During that meeting, the minister reportedly assured the teachers that their arrears would be settled promptly upon his return to Monrovia. However, more than three months later, the teachers say no payments have been made, leaving them with no option but to withdraw their services.

“We have been patient for too long,” one of the teachers stated. “We continue to show up and teach without pay, while our families depend on us. This situation is unacceptable.”

The protest has raised concerns among parents and students, as the absence of teachers threatens to derail the academic calendar. Many students have been left idle, with no clear indication of when normal classes will resume.

Local education authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding the situation. Meanwhile, community members are calling on the government to urgently address the matter to prevent further disruption to learning in the area.
