Tensions Rise as Sasstown Community Reports Illegal Mining on Restricted Land

By Patrick Teah, Jr.,

Grand Kru County, Liberia—Growing concern is emerging in Sasstown as community members raise alarm over ongoing mining activities on a disputed land area that remains under official restriction.

In a communication directed to Grand Kru County Superintendent Antoinette W. Nimely, in Inside Grand Kru messenger chatrooms, Jroa District Superintendent Washington Sackor highlighted that individuals have allegedly entered the restricted zone, including Poe, and commenced mining operations despite an existing moratorium.

The restriction was earlier imposed to prevent conflict and allow authorities to address competing claims over the land. However, the reported activities suggest a breakdown in adherence to the directive, raising concerns about enforcement and local compliance.

According to the communication, authorities in Sasstown have distanced themselves from the actions, stressing their commitment to peace and legal processes. Community leaders insist that residents continue to respect the rule of law and are awaiting intervention from county leadership to resolve the situation.

The development places renewed attention on the need for swift administrative action to prevent escalation and reinforce confidence in local governance mechanisms.

The matter has been formally documented, with expectations that county authorities will respond to restore order and ensure that the moratorium is upheld.
