The Hallmark of Integrity: MOE Former Employee Returns Salary to Gov’t Following New Employment

River Gee County – [July 12, 2025] – A former employee of the Ministry of Education (MOE) than assigned in River Gee County has returned a three months’ salary to the government.

Jay Doe Welah Jr. stated that after accepting a position as a Regional Coordinator with the Ministry of Agriculture in April 2025, he believed it was right to reimburse the salary he received during the transition.

In his statement, Welah expressed his appreciation for his time at the MOE but stressed the importance of ethical responsibility in returning the funds.

I prioritize integrity in my professional endeavors,” he noted. “Since I took on a new position, it was essential for me to ensure that my previous salary only covered the period I was actively working for MOE.”

The total amount returned, includes US$243.70 and LRD 20,734.76, is viewed as a notable act of accountability.

Jay Doe Welah Jr. the County Chairman of the Unity Party, River Gee began his career with the Ministry of Education in 2019, fulfilling various roles such as a classroom teacher, Administrative Assistant to the County Education Officer, School Feeding Coordinator, and lastly, as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the MOE in River Gee.

Despite starting at the Agriculture Ministry, Welah still received three months’ salary from April to June 2025.

He has detailed the returned salaries: April – $81.26, May – $81.29, June – $81.12 in USD, along with LRD amounts for April – 6,926.64, and both May and June at 6,904.05 each, all transferred back to the government account.

Some believe that this gesture could encourage other public servants to embrace similar principles of fairness, particularly amidst increasing scrutiny of transparency in government employment.

As conversations about ethics and accountability in the public sector continue, this incident highlights the significance of ethical behavior in government positions.

Local leaders and community members have commended Welah’s actions, underscoring the critical role of ethics in effective governance.

His action is likely to ignite further debates on the responsibilities of public employees and the necessary steps to maintain trust within government institutions.

Jay Doe Welah Jr. is now overseeing Region 5 of the Ministry of Agriculture, which encompasses River Gee, Maryland, and Grand Kru Counties.

Upon reaching out to the County Education Office of River Gee, they confirmed Welah resignation and funds returned to the government account.

Welah now being recognized as a patriotic Liberian and county education office is encouraging others involved to take similar actions for the improvement of Liberia.
