Liberia: After numerous protests against the appointment of Former Grand Gedeh Representative Alex Grant as the county Superintendent, President Joseph Boakai still sees fate in maintaining the former legislator who is believed to be rejected by his people.
Former Representative Alex Grant was on Monday, April 8, 2024, among hosts of superintendents Designates who appeared before the Liberian Senate to justify their confirmation.
A public confirmation hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Internal Affairs headed by Nimba’s Prince Johnson included 11 superintendents and Assistant Superintendent Designates.
The former Grand Gedeh Lawmaker who is facing rejection by some citizens in the county was among the twelve nominees who are likely to be confirmed.
It is yet to be established whether there’s any intervention made to resolve the dissatisfaction among the citizens to usher in a smooth working environment for the newly appointed superintendent.
Scores of aggrieved citizens in and out of Grand Gedeh County continued to frown on the decision made by the President to appoint a citizen who is expected to lead the administrative aspect of their respective counties if accepted.
This submitted that the hope of the citizens who are likely to be ditched by President Baokai and the Legislature if the defeated Unity Party representative candidate is confirmed and sent to the county as superintendent.
It can be recalled, that Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely of Grand Gedeh joined protesters most of whom were youth to express fear over the county’s development noting that former representative Grant lacked the requisite credentials and suitability to take on said position.
“People who are protesting are mostly students who are looking for role models. The young people are saying why is it that Grand Gedeh can’t have a superintendent who has a degree, qualified and willing when the county already has” Senator Nimely said in an interview.
Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely told the press that the county has been under the illusion of his academic fraudulence, terming it as discontent.
The Grand Dedeh Lawmaker lamented that the Unity Party on the other hand is not showing any sign of adhering to concerns, adding that the executive mansion has put up an imposive posture against the people of Grand Gedeh.
“The people will reject power if you want to turn it into authority. You cannot bypass the people and impose the unlike one. “The People are saying, so I say no” Senator Nimely added.
All eyes are now on the Liberian Senate to determine whether the former lawmaker whose appointment is not favorable in the county is confirmed.
Meanwhile, the twelve nominated superintendents including Alex Grant are Whioway Bryant for Montserrado, Henry Cole for Maryland, Byron W. Zahnwea for River Cess, and Antoinette W. Nimely for Grand Kru Counties.
