“The Senate Has Become a Joke”: Senator Duncan Slams Colleagues — Says Lawmakers are Failing the Liberian People

By: Archie Boan

The Sinoe County Senator criticized the lack of coordination and accountability among the three branches of government, noting that while the Executive and Legislature often work closely together, the Judiciary is left behind — creating imbalance and weak governance.

He accused the Executive of failing to implement laws passed by the Legislature, saying enforcement has been crippled by political interests.

“The laws we make, they do not enforce. But because of party politics and affiliations, we all put aside the purpose of why we are here,” he declared. “We come and use the Senate floor to relieve our stress — we laugh and we joke — but our people continue to suffer.”

Turning his attention to his home county, Senator Duncan painted a grim picture of life in Sinoe, citing rampant unemployment, poor labor practices, and worsening environmental degradation.

He revealed that despite legislative efforts to address these issues, the Executive has shown little will to act.

“When I brought on the floor the issue of our water being polluted by illicit miners — Class B license holders giving their rights to foreigners — the EPA Director came and said there was no money in their budget to visit Sinoe,” Duncan recounted. “We did nothing for another year, and up to today, our waters are still being polluted.”

The Senator questioned the commitment of his colleagues to their constitutional duties, emphasizing that lawmakers have become too comfortable aligning with the Executive instead of holding it accountable.

“Why do we come here? Why do we leave our homes, put on the necktie, and come here when all we do is affiliate with the Executive through party politics and do nothing for our people?” he asked.
