Trial Judges Chief Calls for International Aid to Strengthen Judiciary

By: Moses Gwee

A call with urgency for international aid to Liberia’s judicial system has been made as judges from across Africa convened to address the challenges facing the continent’s judiciary system.

At the forefront of this gathering was Madam Jamesetta Wolokollie, President of the Trial Judges Association of Liberia, who issued a heartfelt plea for international support to bolster the nation’s judiciary.

Speaking on behalf of her association, Madam Wolokollie recounted the strides made by Liberia’s judiciary, including the construction of court houses and salary increases for judges.

Amidst these successes, she pointed out pressing concerns that threaten to undermine the integrity and effectiveness of the judiciary.

Among these concerns is the lack of adequate welfare for judges, as well as the recurrent suspension of salaries and benefits.

Madam Wolokollie emphasized the detrimental impact of these issues on the morale and professionalism of the judiciary, calling for swift intervention from the international community.

A particular concern to Madam Wolokollie is the educational status of magistrates, who constitute a significant portion of Liberia’s judiciary.

She highlighted that many magistrates lack formal legal education, hindering their advancement within the judiciary system.

Despite their eagerness to pursue legal studies, they have been repeatedly denied access to law school by the Supreme Court.

“This denial of educational opportunities not only violates the rights of our citizens but also perpetuates a system of inequality and undermines the trust and credibility of our judiciary,” Madam Wolokollie lamented.

As the voice of Liberia’s trial judges, Madam Wolokollie called upon the International Association of Judges, the overarching body governing judiciary affairs worldwide, to intervene and address these pressing issues.

She urged for a more transparent and equitable judicial system that upholds the rights and dignity of all citizens.

As the four-day conference unfolds, Madam Wolokollie’s impassioned plea serves as a rallying cry for international solidarity and support in the pursuit of a fair and accountable judiciary system in Liberia.

The eyes are on Liberia, as it navigates the delicate balance between justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
