Capitol Hill Campus, University of Liberia – June 23, 2025: In a powerful demonstration of her commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia (UL), has donated US$10,000 to the West Point Women for Health and Development Organization (WPWHDO), a grassroots initiative serving underprivileged women and girls in West Point, Monrovia.
The symbolic presentation of the donation took place Monday morning at the WPWHDO headquarters in West Point, following confirmation that the full amount had been deposited into the organization’s bank account.
Dr. Maparyan’s donation stems from a Legacy Grant awarded by the Global Fund for Women (GFW), a feminist funding organization with nearly four decades of work supporting gender justice worldwide. Dr. Maparyan, who previously served as Chair of the GFW Board, was granted the one time opportunity to direct the funds to an organization of her choosing and chose WPWHDO due to its alignment with GFW’s mission.
“I’ve known Madam Nelly Cooper for over 16 years, and I’ve seen her unwavering commitment to the women of West Point,” Dr. Maparyan said. “This is the kind of leader and organization that deserves support.”
Dr. Maparyan emphasized that her decision to award the Legacy Grant to WPWHDO was both a personal and strategic act, aimed at uplifting local women-led initiatives that promote social equity. “Little did I know I would return to Liberia as President of the University of Liberia,” she added.
Highlighting her broader vision, Dr. Maparyan also announced the establishment of a new Office for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at UL. She said the office will serve as a bridge between the university and communities across Liberia, advancing inclusive development and empowering women and girls.
In response, Madam Nelly Cooper, founder of WPWHDO, expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the donation as timely and lifesaving.
“We’ve lost several grants over the past two years, and it’s been a real struggle,” Madam Cooper said. “This donation is a blessing it came just when we needed it most. We are grateful to Dr. Maparyan and the Global Fund for Women.”
In a symbolic appeal, Madam Cooper invited Dr. Maparyan to consider West Point Women for Health and Development as her “next alma mater,” a heartfelt gesture recognizing the UL President’s solidarity with grassroots efforts.
The ceremony concluded with a vibrant cultural performance, as local troupes honored Dr. Maparyan’s contribution through song and traditional dance, reflecting the joy and appreciation of the West Point community.
