U.S. Ambassador Joins Liberia Trade Panel, Signals a Shift from Aid to Investment

U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Mark Toner participated in the Strengthening U.S.–Liberia Trade and Investment panel held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wednesday, as part of the ongoing three-day Bridge to Prosperity trade mission. The initiative, led by Ambassador Isaac E. Taggart, Jr.—Liberia’s Special Envoy for U.S. Trade and Investment and CEO of Bridge to Prosperity ~ aims to bolster economic ties between the two countries.

The trade mission brought together 20 high-level delegates from 18 U.S.-based companies operating across key sectors such as agriculture, mining, sanitation, infrastructure, logistics, and technology. The event marked a major step toward enhancing Liberia’s access to U.S. investment and trade opportunities.

Addressing participants, Ambassador Toner emphasized the evolving nature of U.S.–Africa relations under the Trump Administration.

Under the Trump Administration, we want to see our bilateral relationship move from one based on assistance to a partnership based on economic development and international investment,” said Toner. “We are making a clear shift: from aid to trade, and we are engaging African nations not as aid recipients, but as capable commercial partners.”

The panel highlighted Liberia’s growing potential as a destination for U.S. investment and reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to forging sustainable economic partnerships rooted in mutual benefit.
