U.S. Embassy Commends Liberian Government, Backs Cllr. Jallah Barbu’s Appointment to War and Economic Crimes Court

The United States Embassy in Liberia has expressed strong support for Cllr. Jallah Barbu, recently appointed as the executive director of Liberia’s forthcoming War and Economic Crimes Court.

In a statement, the embassy commended the Liberian government, specifically Justice Minister N. Oswald Tweh, for conducting an inclusive selection process for the crucial role.

“We applaud the Liberian government and specifically Justice Minister N. Oswald Tweh for an inclusive selection process. We stand ready to support Cllr. Barbu and all Liberians as they establish a court to bring justice for the victims of the gravest crimes committed during Liberia’s civil wars,” the embassy stated.

The embassy’s endorsement highlights the importance of the court in delivering justice for victims of Liberia’s civil conflicts, addressing atrocities committed, and promoting accountability.

The U.S. government has long advocated for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court, viewing it as a step toward lasting peace and justice in Liberia.

As Liberia moves forward with preparations for the court, Cllr. Barbu is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping its mission and structure.

His selection has already garnered attention both locally and internationally, with many viewing the appointment as a positive sign for Liberia’s commitment to justice and reconciliation.
