U.S. Embassy Condemns Violence, Calls for Peaceful Resolution

Monrovia, Liberia – The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia has strongly condemned the violence that erupted on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. In a press statement issued on Wednesday, December 18, the Embassy emphasized the importance of peaceful expression and called for calm among all parties involved.

“Citizens have a right to express their views peacefully, and violence is never the answer,” the Embassy stated, urging political actors to resolve differences through open and transparent processes. It further appealed for unity, compromise, and a return to legislative duties for the benefit of all Liberians.
The Embassy expressed concern over the ongoing impasse that has stalled the work of the Legislature and underscored the need for leaders to uphold democratic principles and practices.

“Liberians expect their leaders to uphold democracy and its practices, to include one that allows for open and transparent political processes and peaceful debate,” the statement read.

The U.S. Embassy also reiterated its commitment to monitoring the unfolding events closely, emphasizing that resolving political disagreements peacefully is critical to maintaining Liberia’s democratic gains. “We remain confident that whatever differences political parties and individual politicians may have, they can come together to address them through direct and peaceful engagement for the good of the nation,” the statement concluded.

The Embassy’s remarks highlight the broader responsibility of Liberian leaders to steer the country through moments of crisis without resorting to violence. As tensions persist on Capitol Hill, the international community and Liberian citizens alike are looking to the nation’s leaders to prioritize dialogue and ensure the Legislature resumes its critical work.

Maintaining democracy, the Embassy noted, requires steadfastness and a willingness to learn from challenges. It remains to be seen whether both sides can heed this call for peace and collaboration, ensuring a swift resolution to the current crisis.
