U.S. Gov’t Partners with CSOs to Counter Corruption in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia: The U.S. Ambassador Mark Toner has met with leading civil society actors in Liberia to build a stronger alliance intended to counter corruption in Liberia and promote accountability. The U.S. Ambassador reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fight corruption during a meeting with four anti-corruption actors: Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), NAYMOTE-Liberia, Accountability Lab, and Integrity Watch Liberia.

The Meeting which was held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the U.S Embassy in Monrovia brought together key actors in the fight against corruption.

During the meeting, the U.S. Ambassador reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fight corruption with four anti-corruption actors.

The Anti-Corruption institutions include Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), NAYMOTE-Liberia, Accountability Lab, and Integrity Watch Liberia.

These four institutions have been championing the call for accountability, transparency and open Governance.

They believe that in a modern democracy, openness and citizens participation in the governance process is healthier.

Democracy is not just about rights and freedoms; it’s about taking responsibility to uphold human rights, scrutinize power holders, and engage in democratic processes at all times.

These institutions ascribed to the tenant of democracy that involves Citizen Participation, Equality, Political Tolerance, Accountability and Transparency, Regular Free and Fair Elections, Economic Freedom, and Control of Abuse of Power as key pillars of democracy.

They believe that accountability and transparency ensure that public officials are answerable to the people and that government actions are openly accessible.

Preventing corruption and misuse of authority through structured governance and active citizen participation is key to a democratic society .
