UN Security Council Holds Open Debate on Middle East as Liberia Calls for Peace and Humanitarian Action

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday convened an open debate on the situation in the Middle East, with a central focus on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, rising tensions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

The debate examined the proposed Gaza peace plan, including discussions surrounding the role of the former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, as well as broader international efforts aimed at de-escalation and long-term stability.

Liberia participated in the high-level debate, with Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti delivering a statement on behalf of the Liberian government.

In her remarks, Nyanti emphasized Liberia’s deep concern over the continued loss of civilian lives and the dire humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinians in Gaza.

She called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations, and renewed diplomatic engagement grounded in international law and United Nations resolutions.

Min. Nyanti also underscored the importance of protecting civilians, particularly women and children, and reaffirmed Liberia’s support for a negotiated two-state solution as the most viable path to lasting peace.

The Foreign Minister further urged the international community to act collectively and decisively to prevent further deterioration of the situation, warning that continued instability poses serious risks to regional and global security.

The open debate brought together representatives from UN member states, regional organizations, and humanitarian agencies, many of whom echoed calls for accountability, restraint, and urgent humanitarian relief.

As the conflict continues to evolve, the Security Council remains under pressure to translate diplomatic discussions into concrete actions that can alleviate suffering and promote sustainable peace across the Middle East.
