UN Women Commemorates 15 Years of Women’s Rights and Advocacy

The United Nations (UN) Women celebrated its 15th anniversary in Liberia on Friday, July 18, 2025, under the powerful theme: “Young Enough to Transform, Old Enough to Deliver.”

The celebration marked a milestone in women’s rights advocacy and gender equality efforts in the country.

Hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the commemorative event took place at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex and featured a striking photographic exhibition chronicling 15 years of progress in advancing the rights of women and girls in Liberia.

The event brought together a vibrant mix of participants, including senior government officials, international partners, civil society leaders, grassroots women’s groups, youth activists, and UN Women’s allies from across the country.

A highlight of the celebration was the presence of Dr. Maxime Houinato, UN Women’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, who is currently on an official mission to Liberia.

Dr. Houinato joined dignitaries and attendees in reflecting on the remarkable strides made in gender advocacy since UN Women’s establishment in the country.

A Journey in Pictures

The theme of the anniversary, “Young Enough to Transform, Old Enough to Deliver,” was vividly brought to life through the photo exhibition, which showcased the evolution of UN Women in Liberia from its early days as an ambitious young agency to its current status as a trusted and results-driven partner.

The photographs told powerful stories of women in leadership, survivors of violence finding justice, girls accessing education, and communities embracing gender equality.

Following its initial display at the Ministerial Complex, the exhibition will be relocated to One UN House on Tubman Boulevard for public viewing.

In marking this important milestone, UN Women also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Liberia’s development, pledging continued support to national efforts aimed at building a more equitable and inclusive society.

“The past 15 years have been about building strong partnerships and achieving results that change lives,” a UN Women representative said. “As we look to the future, our goal is to deepen our work and ensure that every woman and girl in Liberia can thrive.”

The organization expressed special thanks to the Ministry of Gender for its continued partnership and leadership in organizing what many described as an inspirational and hopeful evening.

As Liberia joins UN Women in reflecting on 15 years of progress, the moment also serves as a rallying cry for sustained action, ensuring that the next generation of women and girls inherit a more just, equal, and empowered nation.
