UN Women Urges Liberian Media to Champion Justice for Women and Girls

The Deputy Country Representative of UN Women Liberia, Ms. Yemi Falayajo, has called on journalists and media practitioners across Liberia to take a leading role in exposing injustice, abuse, and violence against women and girls.

Ms. Falayajo made the call on Tuesday while delivering special remarks at the official launch of the Remapsen Liberia Chapter; The African Media Network for the Promotion of Health and the Environment.

The event brought together media professionals, civil society actors, and development partners committed to using journalism as a tool for social change.

She stressed that the media remains one of the strongest pillars in the fight for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights, noting that journalists go beyond reporting daily events.

“Journalists are not merely reporters of events. They are narrators of our shared realities, watchdogs of accountability, and often the first to raise the alarm when communities are at risk,” Ms. Falayajo said. “When women and girls are subjected to rape, domestic violence, digital abuse, harmful practices, or denial of essential services, responsible journalism can expose injustice, challenge harmful norms, and ensure that survivors are seen, heard, and believed.”

According to her, media coverage that is ethical, survivor-centered, and fact-based can help dismantle stigma, promote accountability, and influence policy reforms aimed at protecting women and girls.

Ms. Falayajo also encouraged journalists to use their platforms to expose perpetrators, amplify survivor voices, and advocate for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women and girls. She emphasized that accurate and sensitive reporting can help prevent violence while fostering public understanding of gender-based issues.

The launch of the Remapsen Liberia Chapter marks a significant step toward strengthening media engagement in health, environmental protection, and social justice advocacy. The network seeks to empower journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to report responsibly on issues affecting vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls.

Representatives from the Press Union of Liberia, UN Women Africa (ONU Femmes Afrique), the United Nations in Liberia, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia, and other stakeholders attended the program and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting ethical journalism and gender equality.

As Liberia continues to confront challenges related to sexual and gender-based violence, Ms. Falayajo underscored that the media’s role is indispensable in shaping public discourse, driving accountability, and ensuring that the rights and dignity of women and girls are protected.
