The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Judiciary Branch of Liberia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the country’s justice system through enhanced collaboration and targeted support.
The renewed partnership was underscored during a meeting between UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Dia and Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay Sr., over the weekend.
The engagement focused on advancing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and access to justice across Liberia.
As part of the initiative, UNDP Liberia donated 14 tablet devices to support the ongoing digitization of court processes, a move expected to enhance case management and reduce delays in the judicial system.
Chief Justice Gbeisay noted that the introduction of digital tools will help modernize court operations and improve service delivery within the judiciary.
Discussions between the two institutions also explored avenues for expanding public defense services, particularly for indigent and vulnerable populations.
Both sides emphasized the need to strengthen judicial infrastructure to ensure courts are better equipped to handle increasing caseloads.
Improving access to justice for marginalized communities was highlighted as a central priority during the talks.
UNDP’s support is being delivered through its Rule of Law Programme and the Spotlight Initiative, which focus on promoting accountability and strengthening governance systems.
In a statement, UNDP Resident Representative Dia noted that his institution remains committed to supporting the judiciary branch of Liberia.
“UNDP remains committed to supporting a transparent, efficient, and accountable justice sector in Liberia, ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing justice,” he stated.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing capacity-building efforts within the judiciary.
In 2025, UNDP Liberia supported 60 clerks and assistant clerks of court to complete a two-week intensive training on the upgraded Judiciary Case Management System.
The training aimed to improve case tracking, documentation, and overall court administration.
Judicial authorities have welcomed the continued partnership, noting that such interventions are critical to modernizing Liberia’s justice system.
The collaboration reflects broader efforts to align Liberia’s legal framework with international standards and best practices.
Both UNDP and the judiciary reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining reforms that will strengthen public trust in the justice system.
Both institutions expressed optimism that continued cooperation will yield tangible improvements in efficiency, fairness, and access to justice nationwide.
