United Workers Union Decries Alleged Labor Abuses at NTA

The United Workers Union (UWU) has raised serious concerns over what it describes as ongoing labor violations at the National Transit Authority (NTA).

During a press conference earlier today, union representatives accused the NTA of failing to meet basic labor standards, leaving employees in increasingly difficult conditions.

The union highlighted several grievances, including unpaid salaries, unsafe working environments, and arbitrary dismissals.

According to the UWU, some workers have gone without receiving their full wages for months, plunging them into financial hardship. They also claim that workplace safety protocols have been neglected, putting employees at risk during daily operations.

Union members further alleged numerous attempts to engage NTA management on these issues have been ignored or dismissed without resolution. “We have repeatedly called for dialogue, but our concerns have been met with silence,” said Frederick Saah, a union representative.

The workers are now urging the Civil Service Agency (CSA) to intervene and conduct an independent investigation into the NTA’s labor practices. They demand that the CSA hold management accountable and enforce compliance with Liberia’s labor laws.

“Enough is enough. We are calling on the CSA to intervene immediately,” Saah added. “The government must ensure that public institutions like the NTA set an example in upholding labor standards instead of violating them.”

Attempts to reach NTA management for comment were unsuccessful, but sources within the agency suggested that financial challenges may contribute to salary payment delays and other operational difficulties.

The UWU has also indicated that they may resort to industrial action if their demands are not addressed within a reasonable timeframe. Workers have warned they could stage protests or disrupt NTA operations to press for their rights.
