MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Unity Party (UP) has raised concerns about the increasing misuse of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s image on various items and during events, a practice the party believes undermines its governance principles. These items, ranging from billboards and clothing to coffee mugs and trophies, have been widely displayed at ceremonies and distributed to the public, often to signify loyalty or appreciation.
In a press release on January 3, 2025, the Unity Party clarified that President Boakai strongly opposes using his portrait for personal or institutional glorification. The party described such actions as reminiscent of the sycophantic culture that plagued past administrations, emphasizing that the current government must distance itself from such practices.
The UP reiterated its commitment to a governance philosophy of humility, integrity, and prioritizing national interests. It urged all Liberians, including public officials and government institutions, to avoid actions portraying the presidency as imperial or fostering an atmosphere of undue adulation.
According to the statement, the President’s image should be reserved exclusively for official state events or initiatives formally approved by the government. These include activities such as international engagements or high-level national programs aligned with Liberia’s development agenda.
The Unity Party also warned those engaging in unauthorized displays of President Boakai’s portrait to cease immediately. While the statement refrained from naming specific individuals or organizations, it emphasized that repeat violations would prompt public reprimands.
As President Boakai nears the end of his first year in office, the Unity Party called on its members and the general public to remain steadfast in their commitment to the administration’s developmental goals. The party highlighted that Liberia is on the path to sustained progress and reaffirmed its dedication to steering the country toward a future of stability and prosperity.
