VP Koung Accused of Promoting Tribal Politics

Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has found himself at the center of a political storm following accusations from former Montserrado County District #8 Representative Acarous Moses Gray, who alleges the VP is promoting tribal divisions in Nimba County ahead of the crucial April 22 senatorial by-election.

Gray, a vocal figure in the opposition and a defeated candidate in the 2023 elections, took to social media to lambast the Vice President, accusing him of violating Article 5(c) of the Liberian Constitution, which mandates the promotion of national unity and the elimination of tribalism and sectionalism. In a statement posted on Facebook, Gray alleged that Koung’s involvement in the campaign of Representative Samuel Kogar is tainted by tribal undertones, aimed at consolidating political power among specific ethnic groups in Nimba, a county historically revered for its multi-ethnic harmony.

“The people of Nimba have always lived in harmony and don’t see themselves as Mano, Gio, Mandingo, Krahn, Kpelle, or Gbi,” Gray wrote, accusing the Vice President of stirring tribal sentiments for political advantage.

The allegations come amid heightened political activity in Nimba, Liberia’s second-most populous county and a major electoral battleground. Gray’s comments appear to be a response to what he perceives as growing tribal polarization in the region, which he believes threatens national cohesion.

“Following our campaign launch in Saclepea yesterday, I came across a video this morning in which Prophet Key made a deeply troubling statement against the Mandingo community in Nimba,” Koung stated.“ I strongly condemn this statement. This does not reflect my values or the spirit of our campaign.”

In response, Vice President Koung swiftly distanced himself from any tribal rhetoric, condemning inflammatory remarks made by a controversial public figure, Prophet Key, during a recent campaign event in Saclepea.

The Vice President emphasized his commitment to maintaining peace and unity in Nimba, noting that his push for balanced representation stems from a respect for traditional values and inter-ethnic cooperation. He acknowledged the past debates around tribal representation in the Senate but asserted that such tensions have eased since recent political developments.

The government is making genuine efforts to address longstanding land disputes in Ganta,” Koung added. “If anyone has an issue with a particular individual, that issue should be confronted on a personal basis, not by casting blame on an entire group of people.”

In a move aimed at demonstrating inclusivity, Koung expressed gratitude to the Nimba Mandingo Association (NICOMA) for their public endorsement of Rep. Kogar. “Your trust and support are deeply appreciated and serve as a strong reminder that our future is brighter when we stand together,” he said.
