Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah has threatened the life of embattled House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.
Representative Kolubah says the speaker’s life will be at risk if he resigns his position as Speaker.
Kolubah made the threat minutes after their non-quorum session ended at the Capitol Building on Tuesday, October 22.
According to him, any attempt by the Speaker to resign his position would be a mockery of their tireless efforts to support him (Speaker Koffa) in the face of opposition.
“No Speaker has been removed. Speaker Koffa will never resign. He has assured us that he won’t resign. Any attempt for him to resign, his life will be taken. He should not play fool of us. He cannot play mockery of us. This crisis will continue until this government is dissolved. This government will be dissolved. Any attempt for Speaker Koffa to resign, I will kill him.” Rep. Yekeh Kolubah, District #8, Montserrado County
The Representative believes the 43 lawmakers opposing Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa’s Speakership is in their numbers but not legitimate.
He argues that while it is true that the pro-Koffa bloc of which he is a part is not large enough to have a quorum, it is also unlawful for the opposing side to remove the Speaker.
His argument stems from the fact that the 43 lawmakers opposing Speaker Koffa are not equivalent to two-thirds of the total number of representatives, a situation that does not allow the Speaker’s removal.
He is urging his opposing colleagues to utilize the chambers by bringing the 49 lawmakers, who constitute the two-thirds majority required to remove Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.
He warned President Joseph Boakai not to deal with the opposing bloc, noting that an attempt for the president to do so would lead to him being declared a “government bone.”
Representative Kolubah added that the president will embrace a leadership counterproductive to Liberia’s democracy.
However, the Montserrado District #10 Lawmaker expressed his continual commitment to supporting Cllr—Koffa for the speakership.
