Although the Liberian Senate unanimously concurred with the House of Representatives for the establishment of War and Economic Crimes in Liberia, Westerners have come under questioning for their involvement in establishing the courts.
Senators James Biney of Maryland and Crayton O. Duncan of Sinoe counties could not withstand the acceptance of the court on ground that those behind the establishment of the court are not trustworthy.
28 out of 29 Senators signed the resolution giving rise to a bill expected from the Executive Branch of Government.
The expected bill will factor mechanisms and functionalities of the court with clear emphasis on considering constitutional implications.
Senators Duncan and Biney believe the Western World specifically the US supported warent fractions, leading to brutalization and killings of many Liberians.
The lawmakers wonder how Former President Charles Taylor who is believed to be an escapee from a US prison compound was involved in the Liberia Civil War and later became president.
They pointed out economic exploitation by the West against Liberia’s interest as one the major impediment to Liberia’s growth and development.
Senator James Biney indicated : “If the west continues to exploit our resources without proper benefits, who are they to bring about Economic Crimes Court“
The two senators joined words in asking the legislature to exert the same energy used to sign resolution to protect Liberia resources.
“We must join hands in protecting Liberia resources like we are doing right now” , Sinoe Senator Crayton O. Duncan in a strong voice noted.
Meanwhile, Senator Biney believes the resolution doesn’t consider the implication of the 1986 Constitution, noting is not Worth signing.
Senator James Biney , the only senator who didn’t affix his signature to the resolution assured support to the court if the expected bill aligns with the constitution.
