Who’s saying the truth? Atty. Dugbo says his client Samuel Jackson will be released tomorrow, but City Solicitor Garpue disagrees

By G. Watson Richards

“Our client will be released tomorrow, as the offenses charged are bailable under Liberian law. Contrary to the charges earlier announced by the Inspector General of Police, the Special Grand Jury has indicted him solely for Manslaughter and Negligent Homicide. We will, in due course, address the violations of his rights. Human rights are non-negotiable, regardless.” Atty. Jeremiah Samuel Dugbo, a Lawyer representing defendant Samuel Jackson

“Atty. Jeremiah Samuel Dugbo,

I respectfully disagree with your assertion that your client, Samuel Jackson, will be released tomorrow. Although Manslaughter and Negligent Homicide are bailable offenses under Liberian law, the presumption of guilt is great in this case, given the severity of the charges and the evidence presented. Under Liberian law, when the presumption of guilt is great, bail may be denied, even for bailable offenses. Given the circumstances, it’s likely that the court will deny bail or set a high bail amount, making release unlikely in the short term.” Assigned Roving City Solicitor Garpue K Wonlue, Ministry of Justice, R.L.
