Wongbe Hints at Early Unity Party Talks Ahead of 2029 Elections

Monrovia, Liberia – Representative Taa Wongbe of Nimba County District#9, has suggested that early, behind-the-scenes political discussions are underway within Liberia’s ruling Unity Party as the country looks toward the 2029 general elections.

In a written statement shared publicly, Wongbe named three prominent political figures to watch: Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Ngafuan, Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, and Bong County Senator Johnny Kpehe.

According to Wongbe, conversations within Unity Party circles are exploring possible future political scenarios, including contingencies should President Joseph Boakai decide not to seek another term in office. He noted that some party members are encouraging Minister Ngafuan to consider a future presidential bid, while others are discussing potential political alignment with Senate Pro-Tempore Karnga-Lawrence.

Wongbe also indicated that Senator Kpehe of Bong County name has emerged in vice-presidential discussions, citing the political significance and electoral weight of Bong County.

He emphasized, however, that the talks remain informal and preliminary.

“Nothing is settled. It’s early. But the conversations have started,” Wongbe wrote, adding that more details could emerge as political dynamics continue to evolve.

Neither the Unity Party leadership nor the individuals named have publicly commented on the reported discussions. The 2029 elections remain several years away, but Wongbe’s remarks point to early positioning and internal dialogue within the ruling party as Liberia’s political landscape begins to take shape.
