WONGOSOL acknowledges the efforts of the Liberia National Police in addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse and street involvement among disadvantaged youths across the country.
We recognize the role of law enforcement in maintaining public safety and commend actions taken to curb illegal activities.
However, WONGOSOL stresses that raids alone are not a long-term solution. Similar operations have been carried out before, yet without complementary strategies, these measures only address the symptoms rather than the root causes.
We call on the government to adopt a more intentional, holistic approach by:
Establishing well-structured rehabilitation centers across Liberia, equipped with medical, psychological, and vocational resources.
Providing subsidies and support programs to empower disadvantaged youths and help integrate them into society.
Partnering with civil society organizations already active in youth development to deliver socio-social counseling, life skills training, and empowerment programs.
As signatory to some international frameworks that highlight the importance of youth inclusion and protection, Liberia government must be intentional.
The UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security (2015) underscores youth participation in peace and development, while the African Youth Charter (2006) calls on governments to create opportunities, empower, and protect young people. Liberia’s policies should reflect these commitments by moving beyond punitive measures to sustainable interventions.
WONGOSOL reiterates that every young person deserves dignity, guidance, and opportunities.
We urge the government to shift from temporary enforcement to long-term strategies that protect, rehabilitate, and empower youths, ensuring a safer and more inclusive Liberia for all.
